10 habits of people who lose weight and keep it off
10 habits of people who lose weight and keep it off10 habits of people who lose weight and keep it offMost people who diet will regain 50% of the gelbkreuzgas weight in the first year after losing it. Much of the rest will regain it in the following three years. Most people inherently know that keeping a healthy weight boils down to three things eating healthy, eating less, and being active. But actually doing that can be tough. We make mora than 200 food decisions a day, and most of these appear to be automatic or habitual, which means we unconsciously eat without reflection, deliberation or any sense of awareness of what or how much food we select and consume. So often habitual behaviours override our best intentions.A new study has found the key to staying a healthy weight is to reinforce healthy habits. What the new study foundImagine each time a person goes home in the evening, they eat a snack. When they first eat the snack, a mental link is formed between the context (getting hom e) and their response to that context (eating a snack). Every time they subsequently snack in response to getting home, this link strengthens, to the point that getting home prompts them to eat a snack automatically. This is how a habit forms.New research has found weight-loss interventions that are founded on habit-change, (forming new habits or breaking old habits) may be effective at helping people lose weight and keep it off.We recruited 75 volunteers from the community (aged 18-75) with excess weight or obesity and randomised them into three groups. One program promoted breaking old habits, one promoted forming new habits, and one group was a control (no intervention). The habit-breaking group was sent a text message with a different task to perform every day. These tasks were focused on breaking usual routines and included things such as drive a different way to work today, listen to a new genre of music or write a short story. The habit-forming group was asked to follow a progr am that focused on forming habits centred around healthy lifestyle changes. The group was encouraged to incorporate ten healthy tips into their daily routine, so they became second-nature.Unlike usual weight-loss programs, these interventions did bedrngnis prescribe specific diet plans or exercise regimes, they simply aimed to change small daily habits. After 12 weeks, the habit-forming and habit-breaking participants had lost an average of 3.1kg. More importantly, after 12 months of no intervention and no contact, they had lost abedrngnisher 2.1kg on average. Some 67% of participants reduced their total body weight by over 5%, decreasing their overall risk for developing type two diabetes and heart disease. As well as losing weight, most participants also increased their fruit and vegetable intake and improved their mental health.Habit-based interventions have the potential to change how we think about weight management and, importantly, how we behave.Ten healthy habits you should fo rmThe habits in the habit-forming group, developed by Weight Concern (a UK charity) werekeep to a meal routine eat at roughly the same times each day. Some pro bono briefs are tight & white
Some pro bono briefs are tight & whiteSome pro bono briefs are tight & whiteSome things, once youve see them, can never be un-seen, no matter how hard you try. Such is the image of Covington Burling partner David Remes dropping trou at a press conference in Yemen to illustrate the humiliating search techniques his clients, Yemeni detainees at Guantanamo, are being subjected to by corn fed (to use Remes odd descriptor) U.S. soldiers. (Query doesnt Remes public demonstration sort of undermine hiscontention that the search procedure is so awful? He looks to me like hes enjoying himself.)Anyway, the work of BigLaws so-called Guantanamo bayrumbaum Bar Association has never been moreconspicuousin addition to Remes Michael Clayton moment, weve had the recent Boumediene decision( a triumph for WilmerHale) and the imminent military commission trial of Bin Laden chauffeur Salim Hamdan ( Perkins Coie is disappointed). Despite the liberal rep of a Covington or Cleary, or the rightwing vibe of a Kirkland or Gibson, most BigLaw firms manage to maintain at least the appearance of political neutrality (or, at least, diversity). It seems, however, that the Gitmo Bar might be drawing some real differences among firms into sharp relief a firm who throws its resources at a habeas case on behalf of alleged unlawful combatants is saying something different about itself than the firm whose pro bono efforts are focused on landlord-tenant or asylum cases. If the comments to the WSJ law blog post on Remes are any indicationand if you cant trust blog comments, what can you trust? law students are taking note. For some aspiringBigLaw associates, these distinctions may be a factor in firm choice. Before the comments thread degenerated into wingnut/moonbat name calling, the comments lauding Remes were running about even with the likes of Wow, what an outrage. Dropping Covington from my bid list. -posted by brian7/21/08 UPDATE Remes resigns

How to Decide If a Job Is Right for You
How to Decide If a Job Is Right for You How to Decide If a Job Is Right for You With unemployment low, businesses are finding it difficult to secure the skilled talent they need to meet their hiring goals. So for job seekers with in-demand skills, now is a great time to explore new employment opportunities. Depending on the markets and industries youâre targeting in your search, you might even find yourself weighing multiple job offers. But how do you really know which role is the best match for your abilities, interests and goals? Here are some factors that can help guide your job search and selection process: Factor #1: Compensation For most people, pay is a top consideration when evaluating employment opportunities. But donât focus on salary alone. Benefits, like medical insurance, and perks, such as generous vacation time, are also valuable. They might have even more importance to you than the amount you are paid for your work. Also, take a long-term view toward compensation: Is there potential to grow with the firm and earn more in the not-too-distant future, for example? VIEW OUR SALARY GUIDES Factor #2: Career path How do you want your next job to enhance your overall career path? Sure, youâre trying to decide whatâs right for you today, but you also need to think about whether the position will equip you with the skills and experience you need to succeed over the long term. Does the company emphasize professional development? If so, what type of training and support would you likely receive? Also, is there opportunity to move up in the organization over time, or the potential to work in other departments or roles that might interest you once you have mastered your current position? Factor #3: Lifestyle You have a life outside of work. What do you need from an employer to maintain the right balance between your professional pursuits and personal time? For instance, how time-consuming would your commute to a new job be? Be honest with yourself about how long youâre willing to spend in the car or on public transportation each day. A bad commute can ruin even the best job. Also, ask potential employers for specifics about work-life balance benefits. Is there a work-from-home option? Who is eligible and how often are employees allowed to work remotely? Is there an official policy around flexible scheduling options? You donât want to find out once youâre in the job that you canât take advantage of a perk you were banking on. Factor #4: Corporate values and culture Many companies today have distinct work cultures built around a set of core values that all employees are expected to embody. If you donât believe in a companyâs mission youâre not likely to thrive in the firmâs corporate culture. Itâs well worth your time to find an employer with an atmosphere that aligns with your working style, values and?goals. Perhaps environmental stewardship is very important to you, or a commitment to volunteerism? You can usually learn a lot about an employerâs workplace culture and mission simply by visiting its website or looking at company news highlighted on the firmâs social media channels. SEARCH OUR JOB OPENINGS Factor #5: Coworkers Research by our company shows a clear connection between employee job satisfaction and the strength of workplace friendships. That makes sense. After all, do you want to spend eight hours a day interacting with people you donât get along with? During the interview process, try to get a sense of what your future coworkers are like. For example, you might ask the hiring manager, âCan you tell me about the people I would be working with directly?â and follow up with, âWill I have an opportunity to meet them?â Factor #6: The boss When you work for someone you donât mesh well with, or at all, your stay at the company is likely to be unpleasant and short. In fact, a survey by Robert Half found that unhappiness with management is one of the top reasons workers quit their jobs. Itâs important to try to gauge the personality of your potential boss in the interview process. Try to spark light conversation at appropriate points during your meeting. You could ask questions like, âHow long have you been with the company?â or âWhat do you like most about working here?â Itâs a good sign if your future manager seems sincerely interested in what youâre saying and expresses enthusiasm and pride when talking about the organization, their job and their team. Factor #7: The candidate experience How the company treats you throughout the hiring process might not be something you reflect on until itâs too late. Did the hiring manager seem organized when scheduling interviews? Did they seem engaged or distracted when speaking with you? Has the company been responsive to you and prompt in providing updates? These little things can shed light on what your experience might be like once you become an actual employee. Be selective but smart One mistake I see many job candidates make is viewing the hiring process as one-sided. Theyâre so focused on trying to convince a hiring manager theyâre perfect for the role that they fail to realize this is their opportunity to evaluate potential employers to find the right one. Donât be afraid to put a company under the microscope. Research the firm online. Ask your network for input. And donât hesitate to ask tough (but polite) questions during interviews such as, âWhatâs the biggest challenge in working here?â and âWhen thereâs conflict among team members, how is it typically handled?â The job search process is a time for honesty. Employers need to be transparent about expectations, compensation and more, while candidates need to be direct about not only what they can bring to the table but also what they want in return. If either side fails to communicate clearly, itâs likely to lead to a bad match. Finally, trust your gut. If you have a strong feeling, positive or negative, about a potential employer, explore it and ask yourself why. Being honest with yourself leads to clear thinking and can help increase your chances of committing to a job that will keep you satisfied. A Millennial#8217;s Guide to Maintaining Happiness in Their Career Choices
A Millennial#8217;s Guide to Maintaining Happiness in Their Career Choices A Millennial#8217;s Guide to Maintaining Happiness in Their Career Choices Start With Your Life Plan Life plans are helpful guides for those looking toward their bright futures. You donât need to be a supremely organized person to set successful goals. Just consider the following: Education: How long do you want or need to be in school to achieve your professional goals? Finances: If working through school is an option, what kind of money-saving tactics can you put into action? Budgeting: Living independently while in school is no easy task. How will you budget successfully? Family: When do you want to start settling down with a loved one? Would you like to start a family someday? Recreation and Pleasure: What kind of hobbies do you want to get into? How much time do you need to take off for yourself? What jobs will give you flexible time off, if needed? Sticking to a list of long-term goals can help stay on track. Once youve created your list, check it twice a year to ensure that youre following through with your plans. It may be a good idea to do one self-check on the Fourth of July and another on New Yearâs Day, as they are about six months apart. A Few Questions to Ask Yourself During Your Self-Checks: What have I accomplished? Am I moving forward in my career? What can I improve? What additional steps can I take to continue toward my end goal? Are my values still the same? Should I consider a new career? Checking in on your professional goals can help you give yourself some direction over the coming months. Keeping tabs on these goals is also important in order to prevent yourself from becoming an unhappy or disengaged person. If you find youre straying from your plans, you can take corrective action before its too late. And if you ever find that your goals no longer align with your happiness, remember: the average American will only spend 4.6 years within a given job. Itâs not uncommon to rethink your path, and itâs certainly never too late to do so. Randall Hansen, Ph.D., writes that â[c]areer planning should be a rewarding and positive experience.â Donât let excuses like âI donât have timeâ get in the way of your happy path!

7 Mindsets Successful People Embrace (to Become Even More Successful)
7 Mindsets Successful People Embrace (to Become Even More Successful) 7 Mindsets Successful People Embrace (to Become Even More Successful) Itâs interesting to wonder why some people are more successful than others, especially if you yourself are aiming high. What do people like Richard Branson, Elon Musk, and Bill Gates have that feeds their ongoing excellence and propels them to the highest levels of success? The answers are complex, of course. But, that doesnât mean they canât be learned. Each of these successful people shares certain smart mindsets- mindsets that any one of us can emulate, that will do us good no matter what level of achievement we aspire to. Here are seven of the top examples: 1. They Donât Take Failure Too Seriously Successful people see failure as the opportunity to begin again, but this time more intelligently. They know itâs not a defining event, and they donât treat it as a problem unless it begins to become a habit. They win as if they are used to it, and they lose as if theyâre enjoying the challenge. 2. They Accept Who They Are and What They Are About If you keep putting yourself down, there is no way for you to move forward. Successful people know the smartest mindset you can have is self-acceptance- refusing to be in an adversarial relationship with yourself. 3. They Set Goals and Work to Achieve Them Having a dream is great, but having a dream and goals is smart, because goals are how dreams become achievable. The most successful people are constantly setting and working toward goals to make a positive difference. Goals turn the invisible visible; they let you structure your thinking to always be looking for something you can do to bring you closer to what you want to achieve. They lead you to ask every day, âWhat am I doing that will move me toward where I want to be and what I want to achieve?â Successful people not only set goals, they set them high. And they donât stop until they reach them. 4. They Donât Leave Things to Chance Instead of passively hoping for the best, they take control to make things happen. You always have a choice: You can control your mind, or you can let it control you. Refusing to leave things to chance shows inner strength, decisiveness, and a strong will. Incredible things happen when you decide to take control of what you can control, and let go of the rest. 5. They Donât Let Themselves Get Sidetracked by Problems If your perspective is negative, problems will grow in strength and constantly pull you down, sending your thoughts into some bad neighborhoods. On the other hand, with a positive mindset, you will think of problems as a reason to be creative and come up with innovative solutions. The biggest mistake is thinking of problems as problems. Successful people know that when you focus on problems, you make more of them, but when you focus on possibilities, you have more opportunities. 6. They Are Decisive The most successful people are deft decision makers. They donât waffle or second-guess themselves. They take in the information they need, then clear out their mind and pick the best option based on what they know. If it turns out to be wrong, they learn from it. But they wonât be guilty of not deciding at all. 7. They Are Continually Learning If you want to go far, borrow the mindset known in Zen Buddhism as shoshin, or learnerâs mind. That means you donât pretend to know it all but are open to learning, growth, and development, with a mind thatâs fresh and enthusiastic and free of bias. Experience holds lessons for us all, but you have to remain teachable to take advantage of them. If youâre serious about being successful, cultivate these smart mindsets and see where they take you. 4 Steps to Simplifying Your Job Search
4 Steps to Simplifying Your Job Search 4 Steps to Simplifying Your Job Search When youâre looking for work, you have enough to worry about. Donât make your job hunt more complicated than it needs to be- follow these four steps to start simplifying your job search. 4 Steps to Simplifying Your Job Search 1. Customize, but use a template. One of the cardinal sins of job hunting is using the exact same cover letter and application materials for every position rather than tailoring your language and messaging to each company or gig. That said, you donât need to completely reinvent the wheel every time you apply for an opportunity. A best practice is to use a templated cover letter- meaning one that youâve written with key phrases that will be applicable to most applications- but then customize it as needed for each specific employer. As an example, you might write a cover letter with âboilerplateâ material about some of your past positions, since those will generally stay the same regardless of which type of job you apply to. While keeping this info static, youâd then be free to modify information as needed for the introductory paragraph that explains why youâre interested in the specific company and position. You might also end up changing your boilerplate material as needed, such as when you need to emphasize certain duties you had in the past that are especially relevant for a particular industry or role. 2. Routinize your search process. If you begin each day of your job search with a blank slate on how youâll approach your online search, you can waste a lot of time just figuring out how to get started and where to look. Instead, at the start of your search, carve out an hour or two to identify the most useful job sites for the types of roles or freelance jobs that youâd like to land. is excellent for daily visits if youâre prioritizing finding flexible work, or you might put industry-specific sites on your daily troll list- like MediaBistro.com or JournalismJobs.com if youâre looking for writing, editing, or PR work. 3. Make your materials consistent. Having your various job search materials (resume, LinkedIn profile, online bios, etc.) containing different information can be confusing to potential employers. For example, if your LinkedIn profile shows you working at additional companies that arenât listed on your resume, or gives different percentages than you have on an application that you just emailed to a recruiter, it can be confusing and off-putting to those reviewing your credentials. Donât assume that if you send someone your resume, thatâs all they will look at- itâs standard practice for hiring managers and employers to verify facts and research candidates online. So it pays to take time to standardize the information in all of the materials that youâll be using as part of your job hunt, even if it takes a little more time and money to do this. 4. Keep your files. Another way to avoid reinventing the wheel is to keep accurate records of your various job applications- even the ones that donât net you a job. It may be tempting to delete your files when you find out that someone else was given the position, but you can save yourself some legwork by revisiting your previous materials, cutting and pasting language from them as needed for similar applications. Itâs a full-time job looking for work, but the process doesnât have to give you extra headaches and hassles that can be avoided with some smart simplification steps. Be diligent and intentional about your job search materials and process, and you can save time that you can use to make your job hunt much more effective. Know someone looking for a job? How to Eff Up Your Followup after the Interview
How to Eff Up Your Followup after the Interview How to Eff Up Your Interview Followup How to Eff Up Your Followup after the Interview Of all the frustrations in the job search process, perhaps the worst is the post-interview waiting game. When you get a rejection letter from the employer, you can accept it and move on. But when you have a seemingly great interview and then hear nothing for weeks, it can become downright unbearable. That's how perpetual job seeker Dave (Don't Be Dave) Hetherington was feeling this past Valentine's Day. It had been three solid weeks since he'd interviewed with this company, and he hadn't heard a peep. Dave couldn't bear the silence for another moment and decided to follow up in a big way. As youll see, things quickly spiraled downward from adorable to horrible. Apparently no one ever told Dave the difference between smart and stalker-esque when it comes to following up. For the record, the best thing you can do if you're tempted to pull a Dave is apply for another job, instead. The more job opportunities you have in the pipeline, the less a delay or rejection can hurt you.

Jockeying for Plum Federal Appointments May Begin Earlier in 2016
Jockeying for Plum Federal Appointments May Begin Earlier in 2016 Jockeying for Plum Federal Appointments May Begin Earlier in 2016 Jockeying for Plum Federal Appointments May Begin Earlier in 2016 âBased on our conversations with the Office of Personnel Management, thereâs a chance the next Plum Book may come out before the election, maybe in October.â David Eagles, Director of Presidential Transition Partnership for Public Service UPDATE: Review the 2016 Plum Book for your Presidential Appointee Job Now! Trump Administration Resume / Application Page: Submit Here NOTE: Resume Place Writers will NOT write a first draft of any Pres Appointee application. You must write the first draft of the resume, objectives and cover letter. We will edit and target the content toward a specific Plum Book position. See Information and Request Edit and Reviews Here The federal Plum Book of appointed policy positions may come out earlier than usual in 2016. For candidates for these prestigious jobs in public service, advance preparation will be more important than ever. Competition is always fierce for the thousands of policy positions that come open when a new chief executive moves into the Oval Office. And in 2016, the race may begin earlier than usual. So it will pay for aspiring presidential appointees to start qualifying themselves now, including preparing a resume and cover letter customized to the exacting and elaborate selection process. âA lot of the candidate teamâs work is getting pushed earlier and earlier, into the April-May time frame,â says David Eagles, director of presidential transition at the nonprofit Partnership for Public Service in Washington, in an exclusive interview with The Resume Place. For those who aspire to serve the 45th president, here are seven steps to optimize the chances of landing one of these plum jobs. Target Jobs from the 2012 Plum Book Study United States Government Policy and Supporting Positions, commonly called the Plum Book, and target relevant cabinet departments, agencies or other federal government units as well as functional roles and subject-matter areas. Do networking and research to determine whether those positions are likely to reappear in the Plum Bookâs 2016 edition. Just as in the private sector, government reorganizations can move positions or eliminate them. Expect about 4,000 political appointees in the next presidential administration, Eagles says. Choose a Presidential Candidate and Work Hard for His or Her Campaign Aspiring appointees should pick one candidate and dedicate 100 percent of their efforts to that campaign. âResearch the campaign and reach out â" thereâs no excuse for not doing this,â says Eagles, who has been appointed to serve under both Republican and Democratic presidents, an unusual distinction. Going all out for one candidate â" even in a wide-open primary season â" is a virtual requirement to establish loyalty. In the process, would-be appointees can keep an eye out for a sponsor to support their eventual applications for jobs in the next White House administration. Update Online Profile to Reflect Candidate Loyalty Itâs important to update oneâs online presence with both professional accomplishments and political activities, from working the phones at a campaign office to volunteering for a higher level role in the candidateâs organization. Prepare a Resume and Cover Letter Customized for a Presidential Appointment Successful candidates for presidential appointments will prepare key application materials well in advance of the general election. âDraft a two- or three-page resume that speaks to your expertise, leadership, loyalty to your candidate and political savvy,â says Kathryn Troutman, president of The Resume Place, which provides services to people applying for federal jobs. âYour cover letter should address the presidential recruitment committee and build a bridge between your professional experience and the specific appointment you seek.â If and When the Candidate Wins the Party Nomination, Double Down Keep working for the candidate, starting the day after his or her formal nomination by the party. Learn about the structure of the post-nomination campaign organization and connect with new players relevant to the presidential appointment process. Fine-Tune the Presidential Appointment Resume and Cover Letter As soon as the 2016 Plum Book is published, revise the draft resume and cover letter to precisely target the desired position. âBased on our conversations with Office of Personnel Management, thereâs a chance the new edition may come out before the election, maybe in October,â says Eagles. âYouâll probably submit the job application through your congressman or senator,â says Troutman, co-author with Diane Hudson Burns of The New SES Application: Writing the Traditional ECQs and the New Five-Page Senior Executive Service Federal Resume. If the Chosen Candidate Becomes President-Elect, Blitz for the Target Position Campaign hard for the presidential appointment beginning the day after the election. Continue to volunteer, now for the presidential transition effort. âSet aside time to the meet the requirements of the arduous screening process, and follow all application instructions to the letter,â Troutman says.
